How to Give a MealTrain Meal That's Extra Helpful and Memorable
You've signed up to provide a MealTrain meal to someone you know who is going through a tough time.
Good. We're proud of you!
There are plenty of resources out there offering recipe ideas, but not a ton of advice about how to give a meal that goes the extra mile.
Below are eight ways to level-up your meal. And remember the basics: Don't invite yourself in or stay for more than a minute ("drop and run" or "hug and drop" is the best way to go) and package everything in containers you don't want back.
- Add a Reason to Smile. “One dinner I received included root beer and vanilla ice cream so we could make root beer floats. It was such a sad time, and that brought us some fun and levity.”
- Include a Keepsake. “When friends dropped off a meal around Christmas, they included two brightly colored bird ornaments. Years later, the meals from that time are a blur, but every holiday season I put those ornaments on the tree and very clearly remember their kindness.”
- Don’t Forget Beverages. Hydration is key. Add in a case of sparkling water, kombucha, or a favorite tea.
- Go Beyond Dinner. Include fruit, yogurt, juice, and pastries to make things a little easier the next morning. Canned cinnamon rolls that can be popped in the oven and quickly baked are a good option with a longer shelf life.
- Pair It With a Rainy Day Box. It’s the ultimate level-up: Food to help in the moment. A gift to help in the long haul.
- Slip in a Card. “Include a kind note with the meal.” This is rarely done but means so much. If you don’t know the person you’re bringing dinner to very well, introduce yourself in a quick note.
- Consider the Kids. In addition to dinner, toss in some frozen options (chicken nuggets, pizza bagels) so they have quick dinners on hand for future nights.
- Include Flowers. Because they make everything brighter. Bonus: Already have them in a vase so no work is required on the recipient’s part.
